Being An American essay contest is sponsored by the Bill of Rights Institute. The deadline each year is in the beginning of December. Cash awards of up to $5000 each are awarded to top students in each of nine regions! This is a great way for students to put aside some very serious college funds. High school students from all 50 states and the District of Columbia are eligible to participate.

Since the inception of the Being an American Essay Contest in 2006, more than 80,000 students have written essays for the contest. The contest is open for students in grades 9-12.
The largest contest of its kind in the country, the Being an American Essay Contest explores the Founding principles outlined in the Constitution. The contest is administered by the Bill of Rights Institute, a non-profit educational organization in the Washington, D.C. area devoted to educating young people about the Constitution and Founding principles. The 2011-2012 contest is sponsored by the History Channel.
